hello everyone welcome to todayamp;#39;s webinar from physical electronics todayamp;#39;s topic is x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy xps 101 and the agenda will be first of all weamp;#39;ll talk a little bit about physical electronics or phi as we are known and then weamp;#39;ll get right into xps weamp;#39;ll look a little bit about the history of the technique the basics of xps a little on xps instrumentation and then the types of data that xps can provide we have multiple ion beam technologies for different types of applications and then weamp;#39;ll look at several applications as well and then finish up with some hard xps analysis weamp;#39;ll look at so a little bit about physical electronics so physical electronics is a world leader in surface analytical analytical equipment and we specialize primarily in primarily in xps or x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and that also includes hard xps or hackspace we also have oj electron spectroscopy or ees and also time of flight sec

The electronic work function is acquired spectroscopically by measuring the difference between the Fermi Level and the cutoff of the tail at the low kinetic energy end of the spectrum (a.k.a. spectrum width) and subtracting this value from the incident photon energy.
A spectrometer is any instrument used to probe a property of light as a function of its portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, typically its wavelength, frequency, or energy. The property being measured is usually intensity of light, but other variables like polarization can also be measured.
Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) is an important technique for measuring the energies of the valence states of metallic, semiconducting and adsorbate-covered metal and semiconducting surfaces. Applications include catalysis, organic electronics, optoelectronic devices and photovoltaics.
The area under the curve in XPS peaks is used to quantitate the particular group which is useful to study disorders, functionalization, doping, or surface impurities in the graphene sample.
The work function is a correction factor for the instrument and correlates to the minimum energy required to eject an electron from an atom (see the photoelectric effect for more info, but not necessary to understand this).
XPS detects all elements besides hydrogen and helium, so a survey scan is usually a starting point for most analyses. For each element, there is a range of electron states open to excitation by the x-ray beam.
A mass spectrometer is an analytical instrument that is used to identify the amount and type of chemicals present in a sample by measuring the mass-to-charge ratio and abundance of gas-phase ions.
