A Pap test is mainly used to: screen for and help diagnose precancerous conditions of the cervix and cervical cancer. help diagnose precancerous conditions of the vagina and vaginal cancer. diagnose infection and inflammation in the lower female reproductive tract.
If bleeding after a Pap smear is from normal causes, such as a cervical scratch, the bleeding should stop within a few hours. Spotting may last up to two days, but the bleeding will become lighter. Avoid sex and dont use a tampon in the two to three days following a Pap smear if youre experiencing bleeding.
What happens after a Pap test? You may rest for a few minutes after the procedure before going home. Scraping the cervix may cause a small amount of bleeding. You may want to wear a sanitary pad for any spotting that may occur.
The patient should be supine, in dorsal lithotomy position to correctly perform a Pap smear (see the image below). The coccyx of the patient must be at the edge of the examination table to provide adequate visualization of the cervix once the speculum is inserted.
A Pap smear should not hurt but may feel uncomfortable. You could experience light bleeding afterward, but you should not feel pain or cramping. Let your healthcare provider know if you feel discomfort lasting more than a few minutes or if the bleeding lasts longer than 24 hours.
Youll likely feel the speculum inside your vagina but it shouldnt hurt you. The test only takes a few minutes. Some people have light bleeding afterward but it doesnt last long. If you do have bleeding, dont have sexual intercourse after your Pap smear for 24 hours.
A Pap smear is very safe, and most people only experience mild cramping during the procedure. Some people experience more intense cramping that is similar to or worse than that during a period. Temporary Sensations and Mild Cramping: It is not uncommon to experience temporary sensations or mild cramping immediately after a Pap smear.
