Starting with Android 8.0 (API level 26), notification badgesalso known as notification dotsappear on a launcher icon when the associated app has an active notification. Users can touch hold the app icon to reveal the notifications, along with any app shortcuts, as shown in figure 1.
Notification Badges are those red dots usually accompanied by a number representing your unread notifications for specific apps. They can appear on your home screen, within your App Library, or not appear. Although they can be helpful, they can also be irritating and anxiety-inducing.
Badges are indicators on apps in the upper right corner that would tell you things like: Number of new Messages. Missed phone calls. Unread emails.
Outlook for Android Outlook for iOS. Badge Count reflects all unread mail from your mail account(s), or just unread mail in your Focused Inbox.
When you turn on badges, certain app icons can display information. If you turn on badges for Mail, for example, the number of unread emails in your inbox appears above the Mail icon on your Home Screen.
Applications native to mobile and desktop operating systems can display badges on top of their app icons to inform users that new content is available. For example, an email client application can display the total number of unread messages in a badge and update this number even if the app is not running.
If you dont want to use any other types of alert for an app, Badges can be a good prompt for you to open the app itself to read any notifications youve missed. That said, disabling badges for every app is also a great way to simplify your iPhone or iPad Home Screen.
