A few states do not have a minimum age for agricultural jobs as long as the youth has parental consent. Utah is one of these states. Illinois has the youngest minimum age of 12 years for youth working during school hours. If working outside of school hours, the minimum age decreases to 10 years old.
Generally speaking, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets the minimum age for employment (14 years for non-agricultural jobs), restricts the hours youth under the age of 16 may work, and prohibits youth under the age of 18 from being employed in hazardous occupations.
Youths 14-15 years of age: Work may be performed in retail businesses, food service establishments, service stations and offices of other businesses.
A minor must be at least 14 years old for most occupations unless exempt from the Youth Employment Standards Act. A work permit is required unless the minor is exempt from the act. Minors may be employed in most jobs except those considered hazardous.
Federal and state occupational restrictions are such that in most cases minors must be at least 14 years of age to begin working. Any minor who is at least 12 years of age may be issued a permit by school officials [EC 49111], however few occupations are available to them.
What jobs can I do? If you are 14 or 15 years old, you can work outside school hours in a variety of non-manufacturing and non-hazardous jobs for limited periods of time and under specified conditions.
Persons 14 and 15 years of age may be employed outside school hours in any agricultural occupation not declared hazardous. With written parental consent, 12 and 13 year olds may be employed outside school hours in any non- hazardous job on the same farm where their parents are employed.
Children under the age of 14 generally are not employable, with the exceptions noted above, however 13 year-olds can work as golf caddies and 12 and 13 year-olds can officiate certain youth sports activities. For a complete list of hazardous occupations, please contact IDOL at 312-793-2804.
