While LOG footage offers a flat, malleable profile ideal for color grading, its essential to distinguish it from RAW formats. RAW files contain unprocessed data straight from the cameras sensor, providing even more flexibility but often at the cost of larger file sizes and more intensive post-production work.
LOG is a specific video format processed in the camera, unlike RAW, which is totally unprocessed. LOG footage can be viewed on an external monitor without conversion. And, because its a video format, certain components such as white balance and exposure are made part of the video.
A log profile, or logarithmic profile, is a shooting profile, or gamma curve, found on some digital video cameras that gives a wide dynamic and tonal range, allowing more latitude to apply colour and style choices.
Log is short for logarithmic, and when shooting in log you use a logarithmic rather than a linear tone curve. Not all cameras offer log modes this is associated with higher end models and is a key selling point.
Before grading, videos recorded with the S-Log2 or S-Log3 gamma have more noticeable noise in dark areas compared to videos recorded using other gammas. If the noise is still docHub even after grading, it may be reduced by recording with a brighter setting and grading down to the appropriate brightness later.
Log grading is specifically used when the footage has been shot in a log format, which is a type of video format that preserves more details in the shadows and highlights of the image. In log grading, the colorist adjusts the colors in the log footage to make them appear more natural and balanced.
