Safety regulation 49 C.F.R. 392.5 prohibits a driver from having alcohol in his or her system while having physical control of a commercial motor vehicle, meaning you have immediate access to the keys and your truck is nearby. This applies even while taking a 34-hour restart.
No, the 34-hour reset isnt mandatory, but many drivers do it unknowingly. This rule isnt required if your driver follows the rules 60/70 hours, 14 hours, and 11 hours. Its also an excellent strategy to monitor your drivers and prevent HOS rules violations.
A driver may also use the sleeper berth to extend the 14-hour limit. Any period in the sleeper berth of at least 8 consecutive hours does not count as part of the 14 hours, and, therefore, allows a driver to extend the time during which a driver could use their maximum 11 hours of driving.

Once a driver has worked a total of 60 hours in the past 7 days (or 70 hours in 8 days), they have hit their limit. They must be OFF-Duty for a consecutive 34 hours in order to work again. This is also referred to as the 34-hour reset or 34-hour restart.
The U.S. hours-of-service regulation allows a driver to restart their 60-hour in any 7 consecutive days, or 70-hour any 8 consecutive days clock calculations by taking 34 or more consecutive hours off duty (or in the sleeper berth) or some combination of both.
What your driver log book should contain The date and the total miles driven for the day. The name of the carrier youre working for and the main office address. The license number or the assigned by the carrier number of the vehicle. The name of your co-driver, if you have one and your signature.
What is the 34-hour restart rule? Off Duty: The driver isnt working. Sleeper Berth: The driver is resting in their cab. On Duty: The driver is working, but isnt drivingthis means they may be fueling, inspecting, or unloading. Driving: The driver is driving.
A driver may restart a 7/8 consecutive day period after taking 34 or more consecutive hours off duty. The truck driver 34-hour reset is a way for drivers to reset their workweek and 60/70 hour clock by taking 34 consecutive hours off work, either spent off-duty or in the sleeper berth.
Theres a lot of confusion over the 34-hour rule, as it was implemented on July 1, 2013, but was suspended in 2015 by Congress via the Omnibus Appropriations Bill 2015. The 2013 rule has two stipulations that are now void: The 34-hour period has to contain two periods between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m to be considered valid.
