What happens when we deregister AMI?

When you deregister the AMI, it is simply deleted. However, all the snapshots that were attached to the AMI remain and need to be deleted manually. The diagram below illustrates this concept. If you do not manually delete snapshots after deregistering an AMI, they will continue to incur costs.

What is an AMI used for?

An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is used to create virtual servers (Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud or EC2 instances) in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment. Different types of instances can be launched from a single AMI to support the hardware of the host computer used for the instance.

What does deregister AMI mean?

If an AMI is deregistered, current instances will not be affected, but it cannot be used to launch new instances. Existing instances already using the AMI will not be impacted and will continue to incur instances charges. This means that when a user is finished with an instance, it should be terminated.

Why do you need AMI?

AMIs allow you to pre- any required packages on an EC2 instance, improve boot time, implement security controls for all instances simultaneously, and launch production-ready instances quickly when needed. AMIs provide a blueprint for the root volume which is needed to launch a particular instance.

What is AMI in security?

An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a template that includes all the information you need to spin up a new Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instance. An AMI can be used to launch multiple new instances, all with the same underlying configurations.

When you delete or deregister an Amazon EBS-backed AMI, any snapshots created for the volume of the instance during the AMI creation process are retained. If you accidentally delete the AMI, then you can launch an identical AMI using one of the retained snapshots.
