In this chapter, we discuss eight physical stain-removal techniques: brushing, flushing, freezing, presoaking, pretreating, scraping, sponging, and tamping. Which technique to use in treating a particular spot or stain depends upon both the nature of the stain and the type of surface stained.
Pre-treat with a stain remover, then let it soak in. Launder ing to the fabric care instructions. Regular stains should come out in cold water but for extra dirty clothing or very tough stains, use the warmest setting safe for the fabric. If the stain remains, repeat the steps above.
How does it work? The Tide to Go Instant Stain Remover (the Tide Sticks official name) uses hydrogen peroxide, detergents, surfactants, and water to break up the molecules in a food stain, causing the stain to disappear.
Detergent wash and bleach (as safe for fabric). Dye stains are very difficult to remove. Pretreat the stain with a heavy-duty liquid detergent; then rinse thoroughly. If the stain persists, launder again using chlorine bleach (if safe for fabric).
Stain removal is the process of removing a mark or spot left by one substance on a specific surface like a fabric. A solvent or detergent is generally used to conduct stain removal and many of these are available over the counter.
Stain removers often contain alcohol which acts as a solvent for both water-based and oil-based stains. Hydrocarbon solvents, such as gasoline, may be used to dissolve some stains. The rule here is that like dissolves like. Basically this means you want to use a solvent that is chemically similar to your stain.
Sponging is one of the most frequently used methods of applying many stain-removing agents, including water. Sponging is another technique in which clean absorbent pads are used.
