The University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst or simply UMass) is a public land-grant research university in Amherst, Massachusetts. It is the oldest, largest, and flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system, and was founded in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College.
The USDA logo is a graphic representation of the land - the foundation of all agriculture - and the Departments initials. The logo colors - dark green and dark blue - represent the essential elements of earth, air, and water. Together, these elements comprise the logo.
NOTE: USDA symbols or logos are intended for official USDA use only. They are expressly excluded from any application that would imply or endorse a commercial product or service. The symbol or logo may not be used by anyone outside of USDA without permission.
In 2023, the University of Massachusetts Amherst unveiled a new university seal and brandmark that expands the universitys visual identity system, reflecting the values and unique position of the commonwealths flagship campus. The UMass Amherst seal may be used either stand-alone or in long form.
The old seal of UMass depicted a Native American man with an arm holding a sword over his head, similar to the seal found on the state flag of Massachusetts. The reveal of the new UMass seal follows suit with the states plan to replace its existing seal that was adopted in 1898, as described in the statement.
In 1931, to reflect its broadened curriculum, Mass Aggie had become Massachusetts State College. Mass State in turn became the University of Massachusetts in 1947. Immediately after World War II, the university experienced rapid growth in facilities, programs, and enrollment, with 4000 students in 1954.
Though there was some controversy in the 1990s over the mascot being perceived as a symbol of oppression, the mascot has remained the Minutemen and Minutewomen. The schools colors are maroon and white. Its mascot is Sam the Minuteman, a colonial based on the Concord Minute Mans imagery.
Our logo is the Pegasus. It is our badge and emblem. It creates, promotes and protects the integrity of the UCF message.
