Graduate and undergraduate schools alike often require that prospective students include recommendation letters with their applications. Going a step further, many graduate programs require that the envelope containing the letter be signed and sealed by the writer making the recommendation.
How to Begin a Letter of Recommendation. Your letter should begin with a heading that includes your contact information followed by the date and a greeting or introduction.
Most universities say that they want the recommendation letters of the referees to be in sealed envelopes, and that the referee should sign across the seal, and cover with sticky tape.
Must include the recommenders hand-written signature. Must include the date on which the letter was written. Must clearly explain how the recommender knows the applicant, in what capacity, and for what length of time. Must be submitted on the recommenders official letterhead.
It works fine with undergrad admissions, grad admissions, and faculty/tenure/promotion letters. The only times when Ive had to print out hard copies were for some scholarship foundations, and immigration lawyers.

You do not need stamps or markers or a public notarys endorsement. I am in academia in the US and if we felt the need to verify a recommendation letter, we would just (1) look up the writer and (2) contact the writer directly.
