The seal is mark made on a document issued by a government, a notary, a lawyer, an institution, a university and some professionals to indicate that the document is an authentic document.
The word SEAL at the end of (or below) a signature line means signature. For example, a mortgage note or Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac Texas Deed of Trust will have (Seal) at the end of the line for the borrowers signature. A persons signature is considered their seal.
Filing under seal is a procedure allowing sensitive or confidential information to be filed with a court without becoming a matter of public record. The court generally must give permission for the material to remain under seal.
The concept of a contract under seal dates back to English medieval times, when most adults were illiterate and could not sign their own name. Each party impressed on the physical document a wax seal or other mark bearing his or her individual sign of identification.
First, a bit of history. In the 19th Century, companies signing a contract would press their seal into wax on the contract document. The purpose was to prove the handwritten signature wasnt forged.
In most jurisdictions, the words seal alone add nothing to a contract. But, sometimes, signing a contract with [SEAL] adjacent to the signature may change the parties rights.
While the concept of signing a contract under seal may sound a bit archaic, the inclusion of such a word may docHubly alter legal rights thereunder. Historically, seals were affixed to written contracts as a way of evincing the parties intention to be legally bound by the terms contained therein.
