today iamp;#39;m going to simplify one of the most confusing topics for woodworkers give you actual side-by-side comparisons of 12 popular products and answer the age-old question if there really is a perfect finish to help make sense of this iamp;#39;m going to group finishes into three categories varnishes natural oils and hard wax oils contrary to popular belief varnish is not one singular finish instead itamp;#39;s a broad group of finishes that create a layer of protection over the wood after building up multiple coats this is often referred to as a film finish so everything you see in front of me right now is a varnish not just this guy because it says varnish on the label varnishes are applied by brushing wiping or spraying polyurethane seems to be the go-to for most woodworkers starting out and something like this minwax is a cheap and accessible option since polyurethanes are oil-based they do require a solvent-like paint thinner to clean up your brushes if you choose that

Toothpaste or baking soda These are two of the mildest abrasives around. Use a clean, damp cloth or an old, moistened toothbrush to apply them to the mark. Rub gently with the grain of the wood. If your wood is scratched or pitted, toothpaste and baking soda can leave a chalky residue thats hard to remove.
Make a stain remover by adding enough water to baking soda to create a thick paste. Rub the stain gently with the paste using a soft cloth. Use a damp cloth to wipe up the residue and give the wood a quick buff. Apply petroleum jelly to the watermark and let it sit overnight.
Place a few drops of mild dish soap in to a small bowl of warm water and gently stir. Dip in your soft cloth or sponge, and wring out before gently scrubbing the mark, making sure not to saturate the area, and finish by wiping dry with a soft, clean cloth.
Using a Paste of Olive Oil and Baking Soda This natural remedy helps reduce and remove scratches from your wood surface. To apply, combine equal parts of olive oil and baking soda to create a paste. Then, apply the paste to the scratches and allow it to sit for a day before wiping it off.
Option 1 Use a Vinegar and Olive Oil Combo Add a bit of olive oil just enough to look like an equal amount of both liquids are in the bowl. Let the mixture sit for an hour. Get a soft cloth or rag to apply this mixture onto the scratched area of your furniture. Rub gently until all of the deep scratches are gone.
Painting over scuff marks can be a straightforward and effective way to make your walls look good again.
Water baking soda paste A paste of baking soda and water (mix the parts until theyre the consistency of toothpaste) is mildly abrasive, so it gently buffs away surface scuffs when you rub it on the wall in circular motions with a cloth.
Scuffs on floors and walls are often easier to remove when theyre fresh. Rather than docHubing for harsh chemicals first, try plain water. Start with a damp, soft cloth or sponge, and gently wipe the mark so keep the surface safe.
