(1) To completely erase data from memory (RAM) or a storage device (hard disk, SSD).
Therefore, quick erase is still possible to get recovered by using special tools. Full erase, on the other hand, would clean data in all sectors of the disc by overwriting once, which means the old data is gone forever and make the whole disk erase back to the unwritten state.
Shred can also be used on a single partition, e.g. to wipe the first partition use shred -v /dev/sdX1 . Alternatively, shred can be instructed to do only one pass, with entropy from e.g. /dev/urandom , and a final overwrite with zeros.
The del and erase commands are functionally identical. Using the del command to delete a file does not move it to the Recycle Bin. In other words, you cant get a file back once you use the del command, unless you have a special unerase disk recovery utility.
Wiping is a distinctly different operation compared to erasing. While erasing completely deletes all of your data on the given partitions or disks, wiping only deletes only those spaces and files on the hard drive that are of no use to the OS nor you.
Upon launching KIllDisk Users will notice that there is a wipe and erase function available. The difference between the two is not immediately recognizable. The Wipe command processes all logical drives consecutively erasing data in unoccupied areas (free clusters and system areas) and leaving existing data intact.
Wiping the entire disk Use the sudo command as well (sudo dd) Filling the disk with all zeros (This may take a while, as it is making every bit of data 0) : dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=1M #replace X with the target drive letter.
But in the meantime, the deleted file is still there, and it can be accessed by someone who knows how to pull it directly from your computers hard drive. Wiping your device protects against that. A wipe actively writes over your old files so that your old data is replaced, and thus removed.
