hi this is jeff gentry bpa bloodstained pattern analyst uh just a little bit ago i went ahead and drew my own blood and created some drip stains on the counter its a tile surface its nice and smooth so we got good circular drip stains they were created at about uh one foot height off the surface this was about well see where were about 20 minutes ago is when we created these drip stains so i want to show what it looks like when blood starts to dry so im going to take my finger and run it through it this is going to be a form of a transfer so theres two different transfers theres a wipe when blood is already on a surface and youre essentially wiping it off or disturbing it and then theres a swipe when you take a bloody object and transfer it to a clean surface so im going to demonstrate both of those so here we go were going to go right through the middle of the bloodstain okay so this is an example of a wipe and you see that the blood is already starting to clot and coagula

As the angle of impact is made smaller or more acute, the bloodstain pattern will become more elongated, elliptical, or oval in shape. The resulting bloodstain's shape will indicate the direction of travel for that stain and thus, the origin of the drop of blood.
Blood spatter is categorized as impact spatter (created when a force is applied to a liquid blood source) or projection spatter (caused by arterial spurting, expirated spray or spatter cast off an object).
A wipe pattern is a bloodstain pattern created when an object moves through an existing stain, removing and/or altering its appearance. On the photo a wipe pattern is shown where a person on his socks walked through wet bloodstains.
A wipe pattern is “An altered bloodstain pattern resulting from an object moving through a pre-existing wet bloodstain.”
Swipe Pattern - A bloodstain pattern resulting from the transfer of blood from a blood-bearing surface onto another surface, with characteristics that indicate relative motion between the two surfaces. Transfer Stain - A bloodstain resulting from contact between a blood-bearing surface and another surface.
Wipe and Swipe pattern A swipe pattern is the transfer of blood from a moving source onto an unstained surface. Direction of travel may be determined by the feathered edge. The photo shows a pattern where a victim was dragged by the perpetrator.
