Hi, everyone! This is Heather from the Purdue Writing Lab. In this video, we will be talking about paragraph organization and flow. Whether youre still drafting your thesis or dissertation or in the process of revising your project, its important to think about your writing on a paragraph-level. Strong, clear paragraphs act like solid building blocks that create the foundation for your argument. Throughout this video, well talk about 3 major components of paragraph-level writing to consider including unity, coherence, and development. To begin, lets start with a five-minute warm up activity. For this exercise, choose one paragraph from your current project. If youre still drafting, youre welcome to either look at a paragraph from your own written work or from one of your sources. Take a few minutes to read carefully through your chosen paragraph. Try to locate the different components of the paragraph. Do you see a clear introductory sentence? But a general guideline for the paragraphs in your college essays is that they should be about 1/3 to 1/2 of a page. Any longer, and chances are good that you have more than one main idea. In which case, you need to find the other secondary main ideas and give them their own paragraphs.
Length of a paragraph Academic paragraphs are usually between 200 and 300 words long (they vary more than this but it is a useful guide). The important thing is that they should be long enough to contain all the above material. Only move onto a new paragraph if you are making a new point.
There is no absolute rule for how many sentences a paragraph must have. A paragraph can have two to three sentences, but the typical maximum number is five sentences to be considered a good paragraph.
Paragraphs are the reports building blocks and it is important to structure them well. Each paragraph should contain one main idea. It develops that idea in three parts, with a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a concluding or linking sentence.
Aim for three to five or more sentences per paragraph. Include on each page about two handwritten or three typed paragraphs. Make your paragraphs proportional to your paper. Since paragraphs do less work in short papers, have short paragraphs for short papers and longer paragraphs for longer papers.
In most cases, a 500-word paragraph is too long, but paragraph size differs based on essay type and required length. 🎡 Can a 500 word essay be 3 paragraphs? Yes. A 500-word essay could have 3 substantial paragraphs, but most will have around 4-6 paragraphs.
