Long ago, writing surfaces were so rare that they were often used more than once. Palimpsest originally described an early form of recycling in which an old document was erased to make room for a new one when parchment ran short.
The Merneptah stele is considered to be the first extra-biblical reference to ancient Israel in ancient history and is widely considered to be authentic and providing historical information.
The Novgorod Codex is the oldest book of Rus. It was found in 2000 and is a famous example of a palimpsest. Three bound wooden tablets, which contain four pages filled with wax, play host to at least dozens, if not many more, texts. Each time they wrote, they wiped out the previous work.
The writing was washed from parchment or vellum using milk and oat bran. With the passing of time, the faint remains of the former writing would reappear enough so that scholars can discern the text (called the scriptio inferior, the underwriting) and decipher it.
No contemporary Egyptian sources mention Moses, or the events of ExodusDeuteronomy, nor has any archaeological evidence been discovered in Egypt or the Sinai wilderness to support the story in which he is the central figure.
The most famous (relatively speaking) palimpsest is the Archimedes (yes, he of eureka and naked bum fame) Palimpsest. Its a 13th-century prayer book which contains several erased texts that were written hundreds of years before that.
Palimpsests were made by taking parchment that had already been written on and then scraping off the existing text with pumice, a form of volcanic glass (British Library, n.d.).
The practice of reusing parchment or paper by scraping off the original text and writing new text over the old, resulting in a layered document known as a palimpsest, dates back to very old times.
