If you create an AMI from an existing instance, once the AMI is created, AWS creates a snapshot of the root storage as well as all the EBS volumes that are attached to the instance. When you deregister the AMI, it is simply deleted.
You can deregister an AMI when you have finished using it. After you deregister an AMI, you cant use it to launch new instances. When you deregister an AMI, it doesnt affect any instances that youve already launched from the AMI or any snapshots created during the AMI creation process.
Using AWS Console 02 Navigate to Amazon EC2 console at . 03 In the navigation panel, under Images, choose AMIs. 04 Select the Amazon Machine Image (AMI) that you want to examine. 05 Select the Details tab from the console bottom panel and copy the AMI ID attribute value.
Deleting backups manually In the AWS Backup console, in the navigation pane, choose Backup vaults. On the Backup vaults page, choose the backup vault where you stored the backups. Choose a recovery point, choose the Actions dropdown, then choose Delete.
To delete an image (AWS Management Console) In the navigation pane, choose Repositories. On the Repositories page, choose the repository that contains the image to delete. On the Repositories: repositoryname page, select the box to the left of the image to delete and choose Delete.
To manually delete a recovery point using the console, complete the following steps: Open the AWS Backup console. In the navigation pane, choose Backup vaults. Select the backup vault that contains the Amazon EC2 backups. Then, choose the AMI you want to delete. Choose Actions, and then choose Delete.
Resolution Note the AMI ID in the error message. Open the Amazon EC2 console, and from the navigation pane, choose AMIs. Choose the AMI that you noted in the error message, open the Actions menu, and then choose Deregister AMI. Use the EC2 console or the AWS CLI to delete the EBS snapshot.
Resolution Open the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) console, and then select AMIs. From the dropdown list, select Owned by me. Choose the gear symbol in the upper-right corner. Turn on the Product code option, and then select Confirm. Select the AMIs that you no longer need. Select Actions, Deregister AMI.
