Typesetting is generally more associated with the formal process of standardizing text so that it is readable and legible. For example, a book publisher would use typesetting to make sure that the text on each page conforms to standards regarding spacing, font size, and type of font so that the text is easy to read.
The machine typesetting era began in 1886 and ended in 1976, and it is barely in practice (90 years). The phototypesetting era began in 1950 and ended around 1990, and it is totally gone (40 years). The laser imagesetting era began in 1978 and ended in 2008, replaced by direct-to-plate, on- and off-press (30 years).
Definitions of typesetter. noun. one who sets written material into type. synonyms: compositor, setter, typographer. type of: pressman, printer.
When printed materials were first released, typesetters were responsible for cutting blocks of type out of wood or metal and arranging them onto plates to create printed broadsheets or books. Very few artisan booksellers today still work in this manner; most modern typesetters create type using digital technology.

Major newspaper publishers retired Linotype and similar hot metal typesetting machines during the 1970s and 1980s, replacing them with phototypesetting equipment and later computerized typesetting and page composition systems.
Manual typesetting was replaced by mechanical typesetting in the 19th century, where one of the earliest machines was designed by Ottmar Mergenthaler in 1884 and called the Linotype machine.
Basic Typesetting in Microsoft Word Highlight the text you want to format. Go to the Home tab. Use the font dropdown menu to choose a font. Adjust the font size, bold, italics, and underline options.
