What is Radix 64 Encoding? Radix 64 encoding allows binary data stored in octets (i.e. bytes) to be expressed as printable characters.
Base64 allowed us to camouflage any data as text in order to pass validation when transmitted between email servers. It also ensured that this pseudo-text contained only safe characters, that is 1) only printable ones and 2) only those that have no special meaning in SMTP and (hopefully) in most other systems.
Fundamentally, Base64 is used to encode binary data as printable text. This allows you to transport binary over protocols or mediums that cannot handle binary data formats and require simple text. Base64 is a method to convert byteswhich can represent anything, like text, images, videoto a sequence of ASCII characters. So, you can use base64 to convert an UTF-8-encoded text to an ASCII text (though one that is not really readable to humans), but no, it is not UTF-8.
The steps followed by the base64 algorithm include: Count the number of characters in a string. If its not a multiple of three, pad with a special character, i.e., = to make it a multiple of three. Encode the string in ASCII format. Now, it will convert the ASCII to binary format, 8 bit each. Base64 Encoding: What Is It?
