Most human urine is between pH 4.5 and 8.5. If the pH is moderately abnormal (between 4.0 to 4.5 (too acid) or between 9.0 and 11.0 (too alkaline), the lab will report it as invalid. This means it is a specimen which possibly had something added to it to try to mask a positive drug test.
This method is unable to distinguish between specific benzodiazepines and should be used for screening. Confirmation testing should be considered for positive screens; (See Benzodiazepines, Confirmation.) Note: These results are for medical purposes only.
Medication Interference This is not something you can easily determine without consulting your doctor, but keep in mind it could potentially influence a false positive or negative. Medications that could affect your test include benzodiazepines, phenothiazine, promethazine and others.
False-negative results occur when a drug or metabolite is present at such low levels that it is not detected. Confirmatory testing is essential to distinguish a true negative from a false negative. Contaminants can also interfere with the immunoassays ability to detect the presence of drugs.
There are some commonly used benzodiazepines (i.e., alprazolam, clonazepam) that can result in negative testing results although cross-reactivity is not uncommon. There are also several reports of NSAIDS and an HIV medication (efavirenz) producing false positive results (See Table 2).
medMATCH reports, if ordered, indicate whether a detected drug was prescribed (consistent) or not prescribed (inconsistent), or whether a prescribed drug was not detected (inconsistent). The latter result may indicate noncompliance with the treatment plan, or diversion.
The false-negative rate for benzodiazepines in an immunoassay screen is approximately 25-30 percent, and is particularly problematic for clonazepam.
