If youre using oil paints, start by thinning your oil paint with a solvent (such as turpenoid) and a binder. Using thinner paint will allow the underpainting to blend in better with later layers of paint. If you dont want to use a solvent, water-mixable oil paint is a good alternative.
Subtractive painting involves adding layers of paint to a ground, then selectively wiping them away to create an image. Using Golden OPEN acrylics on top of molding paste, and in conjunction with glazes, its possible to create highly colorful compositions with layers of depth.
Allow acrylic layers to dry fully before painting on top with oils. Even thin layers of acrylic can take up to 3 days to fully dry. We recommend waiting this amount of time after your final layer of acrylic before beginning your oil painting, and even longer if the layers are thickly applied.
Artists have been using canvas for more than 300 years, so it comes highly recommended. The weave of the cloth, combined with the spring of the stretched material, makes it excellent for oil painting. Canvas is often made from linen or cotton.
Use a lean paint mixture: For the underpainting layer, its generally recommended to use a lean mixture of paint, which means mixing your oil paints with a solvent like odorless mineral spirits or turpentine.
Priming is the process of creating a barrier between the canvas and the paint. Its typically done by applying layers of acrylic gesso, clear acrylic medium, or oil primer. Prepping your canvas makes it less absorbent, helps your paint sit better on the surface, and protects your canvas from natural corrosion.
Most underpaintings are monochromatic and begin with a coloured ground, which is colour applied as an even layer across the surface. The artist may leave out or remove highlighted areas to allow the white beneath to show through, giving the final work a greater sense of light and contrast.
The technique is simple: Once the canvas has been covered with a solid layer of dark or medium-dark paint, a lintless cloth or brush can be used to bring back the white of the canvas. The cloth or brush can be dry, or it can be dipped in a bit of odorless mineral spirits (for oil paint) or water (for acrylic paint).
