During a Pap smear, a healthcare professional takes a small sample of cervical cells to screen for cervical cancer. Collecting cells from the cervix can cause light bleeding or spotting that may last for 12 days.
Your healthcare provider will use a small brush, swab or spatula to gently remove cells from the cervix and back of the vagina. They will place the cells in a vial of liquid or smear the cells on a glass microscope slide. If you need an HPV test, your provider will take a sample of cells for this test as well.
A Pap test can be normal (or negative), unclear, abnormal, or unsatisfactory. In contrast, an HPV test can be negative or positive. Even if a Pap test is negative, you still need a Pap exam every three years, as its possible for the cells in your cervix to change.
Symptoms. Some conditions that cause abnormal Pap smear results can produce uncomfortable symptoms, such as: Pain, itching or burning around the genital area during sexual intercourse or urination. Unusual vaginal discharge.
Because the procedure touches the cervix, it can trigger vasovagal response - the stimulation of the vagus nerve which can make you lightheaded, sweaty, and dizzy. This can lower your blood pressure making you feel faint. Other side effects of smears are temporary bleeding (spotting) and cramping.
What can a Pap smear detect? Cervical cancer. Potentially precancerous cells in the cervix (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia). Human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that increases the risk of cervical cancer.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
