An inconclusive test just means that the sample that we collected wasnt useable. This can happen if youve been sexually active or used tampons with two days before your test. Your doctor will usually recommend repeating the test.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance is the most common abnormal finding in a Pap test. It may be a sign of infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) or other types of infection, such as a yeast infection.
For routine Pap tests, both the scraping of the squamocolumnar junction and endocervical brushing should be spread onto the same slide. Label the glass slide with the patients last name, first name and medical record number (or date of birth) using a graphite pencil (do not use ink, wax or crayon).
Most often, the abnormal test result means there have been cell changes caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Changes to your cervical cells caused by HPV can be mild, moderate, or severe. Inflammation can happen if youve had sex or used a diaphragm shortly before having a Pap smear.
An abnormal Pap test or HPV test result may mean more testing is needed to see if a cancer or a pre-cancer is present. The tests that are used include colposcopy (with biopsy), endocervical scraping and cone biopsies.
What do my cervical screening results mean? No HPV found - means you dont have high risk HPV. HPV found with no cell changes - means you have high-risk HPV, but you do not have changes to your cervical cells. HPV found with cell changes - means you have high risk HPV and cervical cell changes.
Results and Follow-Up Normal: No sign of disease. This means nothing irregular was found. Unclear: The lab couldnt determine whether the cells are normal or abnormal. Your healthcare provider may have you come back immediately or in six months for another Pap smear. Abnormal: The cells look different than they should.
