Symptoms of an ACL Injury? Pain on the outside and back of the knee. Knee swelling within the first few hours of the injury. Limited knee movement because of swelling and/or pain. Loss of full range of motion. Discomfort while walking.
ACL tears are often associated with a popping sound, immediate swelling, and a feeling of instability. MCL tears commonly cause knee pain and tenderness along the inner side of the knee. Meniscus tears may produce a popping sensation, locking or catching of the knee, and difficulty straightening the leg.
Wound Care Wash your hands well with soap and water. Remove the dressing carefully. Soak some clean gauze with saline and wipe from one end of the incision to the other. Dry the incision the same way with clean, dry gauze. Check your wound for signs of infection.
Let the water run down over the incisions but do not rub or scrub them. o Do not soak or submerge the surgical site for at least 3 weeks following surgery. o Rest and elevate your leg for the first 24 hours. Use a pillow under your calf and ankle.
Do not take a bath, swim, use a hot tub, or soak your leg for 2 weeks or until your doctor says its okay. You can drive when you are no longer using crutches or a knee brace, are no longer taking prescription pain medicine, and have some control over your knee. For most people, this takes 1 to 2 weeks.
Therefore, you may shower when you get home, but the incision will need to be covered. I recommend using saran wrap around the area to prevent it from getting wet. The stitches will be removed at the first follow up appointment 7-14 days after the surgery; thereafter, it is safe to get the incision wet.
Soak the gauze or cloth in the saline solution or soapy water, and gently dab or wipe the skin with it. Try to remove all drainage and any dried blood or other matter that may have built up on the skin. Do not use skin cleansers, alcohol, peroxide, iodine, or soap with antibacterial chemicals.
A bad sprain can involve a small tear, but in most cases, it is only when the ligament has been stretched too far. ACL injuries are graded on a scale of one to three. Your doctor will determine the grade of injury you have following a physical examination and by using imaging tests such as X-rays or an MRI.
