A factory reset does not usually delete data, instead it places your data into unallocated space on the hard drive which the system may then overwrite during the reset / reinstall process. Therefore, whether your old files are recoverable after a factory reset or not depends a lot on luck.
Restore your Dell computer using Windows Push-Button Reset Click Start. Select Reset this PC (System Setting). Under Reset this PC, select Get Started. Select the option to Remove everything. If you are keeping this computer, select Just remove my files. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset process.
The most effective way to destroy a hard drive is to shred it. Similar to shredding documents and paper, shredding turns a hard drive into a million tiny pieces that cant be put back together again, therefore destroying and erasing the data forever.
Free up space with Disk Cleanup In the search box on the taskbar, type disk cleanup, then select it from the results. Select the drive you want to clean up files for, then select OK. Select the check box next to the type of files you want to delete. (To view a description of each type of file, select the name.)
It requires the user to be physically present and multiple confirmations from the user to prevent accidental or unauthorized data wipe. However, Dell data wipe may not be suitable for businesses looking to comply with data protection laws and regulations (like EU-GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, SOX, GLBA, PCI DSS, etc.)
Back up your data to an external hard drive, or a cloud backup service such as OneDrive. Go to Start Settings Update Security Recovery Reset PC. Select Remove everything, and then Remove files and clean the drive. Click Next, Reset, and then Continue.
Wiping (also called formatting) a hard drive is a good way to start fresh as well as clear data before selling it to a stranger. Formatting the drive also allows you to switch to a different file system type when needed. This wikiHow teaches you how to format an external hard drive using Windows and macOS.
Connect your external drive to your PC via a USB port. Then, press the Windows key + X and select Disk Management. Right-click the drive youd like to wipe and select Format. Choose a new file system.
