Diane Harper is studying a new therapy that she hopes will wipe out cervical cancer by eliminating the HPV virus that can cause it unlike chlamydia or gonorrhea where you can take an antibiotic and you can get cured we donamp;#39;t have anything at this time that will get rid of HPV researchers enrolled 200 women with precancerous cervical lesions and gave them three injections one week apart the therapy was a protein that triggered an immune response that activates the immune system to go in and find the cells that are infected with HPV or the cells that have started to change bec

An abnormal finding means that some cells in your cervix look unusual. In some cases, this could indicate precancerous changes of your cervix. An abnormal Pap smear doesnt mean you have cancer. But, it does require careful follow-ups with your healthcare provider. This means that cancer cells or other concerning cells are present, but the test doesnt find them. A false-negative result doesnt mean that a mistake was made. A false-negative result could happen because: Too few cells were collected.
What can a Pap smear detect? Cervical cancer. Potentially precancerous cells in the cervix (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia). Human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that increases the risk of cervical cancer.
During a Pap smear, a healthcare professional takes a small sample of cervical cells to screen for cervical cancer. Collecting cells from the cervix can cause light bleeding or spotting that may last for 12 days.
Some things that you do in the days before a Pap smear can affect test results. For the most accurate results, you should: Not have vaginal sex for two days before your exam. Not use tampons, vaginal creams or medicines, birth control foams or jellies, lubricants or douches for at least two days before the test.
Symptoms. Some conditions that cause abnormal Pap smear results can produce uncomfortable symptoms, such as: Pain, itching or burning around the genital area during sexual intercourse or urination. Unusual vaginal discharge.
What happens after a Pap test? Bleeding. Foul-smelling drainage from your vagina. Fever or chills. Severe abdominal pain. Pap Test | Johns Hopkins Medicine hopkinsmedicine.org health pap-test hopkinsmedicine.org health pap-test
Pap Results Are Often Inaccurate Sometimes these false positive Paps can be explained by a recent vaginal infection, or trauma to the cervix due to douching, tampons, or intercourse; sometimes the false positives just represent an inherent limitation of the test.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
