One of the most common comma mistakes is not using a comma before a coordinating conjunction (such as but) when the conjunction connects two independent clauses: Incorrect: The man ate the pie but he didnt pay the bill. Correct: The man ate the pie, but he didnt pay the bill.
Except after an introductory dependent clause, do not use a comma to separate a dependent clause from a main clause unless the dependent clause provides nonessential information. See also Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Modifiers.
The Five Most Common Mistakes Mistake #1: No comma after an introductory element. Mistake #2: No comma in a non-restrictive element. Mistake #3: Unnecessary comma with a restrictive element. Mistake #4: No comma in a compound sentence: Mistake #5: Comma Splice.
Some writers omit the comma if both clauses are short: Example: I paint and he writes. If there is no independent clause after the connector, a comma is generally unnecessary. Example: He thought quickly but still did not answer correctly.
➢ We hated the meatloaf, the cafeteria served it every Friday. Incorrect! o Revised: We hated the meatloaf that the cafeteria served every Friday. A comma splice occurs when only a comma separates clauses that could each stand alone as a sentence.
Wrong: She hated going to the dentist, and, she cried the whole way there. Why: Theres a comma after a conjunction joining two complete sentences. Right: She hated going to the dentist, and she cried the whole way there.
Writers commonly use commas before the second conjunction in the pair, but they shouldnt. For example: She not only completed the race, but also set a record. This is actually incorrect. It should be: She not only completed the race but also set a record. The same is true for either/or sentences.
Dont use commas if the clause is essential for meaning. If you can remove the clause and your sentence means the same thing, its non-essential and should go between commas. Non-essential clauses are also called non-restrictive or non-defining clauses.
