In filesystems, we use the double dot (..) to access the parent directory, whereas the single dot (.) represents the current directory.
A colon is a punctuation mark consisting of two dots, one placed above the other. It looks like this : Colons are often used to introduce a list, but thats not all they can do! Think of a colon as a flashing sign that points to your text.
The dot tells such systems that the file or directory is not to be displayed in a normal directory listing. Although other answers suggest this applies to Windows as well, my experience is that Windows does nothing special with a dot/period/fullstop as the first character of a file or folder name.
Adding the dot to the end of the domain name makes it an absolute fully-qualified domain name instead of just a regular fully-qualified domain name, and most browsers treat absolute domain names as being a different domain from the equivalent regular domain name (Im not sure why they do this though).
A dot ( . ) can be part of a file or directory name including the first and last position. On UNIX a single dot in a path refers to the current directory and can thus always be resolved to a directory whose name is not . .
The files and folders which start with dot means they are hidden. But there might be hidden files which dont have have dot. So files with dot are hidden by system, and those files we hide doesnt start with dot. Use the Context Menu or the MKDIR command line to to create a file or folder name starting with Dot (.)
One dot (.) always refers to the current folder. Two dots (..) refers to the folder that is one level higher than the current folder.
Unix and Unix-like environments. In Unix-like operating systems, any file or folder that starts with a dot character (for example, /home/user/. config), commonly called a dot file or dotfile, is to be treated as hidden that is, the ls command does not display them unless the -a or -A flags ( ls -a or ls -A ) are used
