this is an example of one of the specular theyamp;#39;re plastic and they come in a variety of sizes this being one of our smallest ones as you can see it opens up so we can take a good look at the cervix but we donamp;#39;t open it immediately we gently insert it and what i tend to say is tell me if you need me to stop at any point come and take a look before i start i let you know that the speculumamp;#39;s going in now and iamp;#39;m probably at about the right space i begin to open it a little bit more and i ask you if youamp;#39;d like me to stop at any point i will do from there i can get a good idea of whether this is a healthy cervix or weamp;#39;ve got anything to worry about then i take this which is pretty flexible as you can see this is used to sample some of the cells get the right spot and turn it around five times one two three four five once thatamp;#39;s done the examination is usually done

During a Pap test, a tool called a speculum holds the vaginal walls apart. A sample of cells from the cervix is collected using a soft brush and a flat scraping device called a spatula (1 and 2). The cells are placed in a bottle that contains a solution to preserve them (3).
High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL): There are moderately or severely abnormal cervical cells that could become cancer in the future if not treated. Your health care provider will likely ask you to come back for a colposcopy.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
The Papanicolaou stain is undoubtedly the most commonly used in cytology. It has three cytoplasmic dyes, orange G, eosin Y, and light blue. It can stain cells blue or blue-green (basophilia, cyanophilia), pink (acidophilia, eosinophilia), orange (orangeophilia), or indeterminate (gray-blue).
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
Atypical squamous cells can be a sign of: HPV (human papillomavirus) infection. Benign (noncancerous) cellular changes. Cervical cysts or polyps.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
