Removing unused indexes can improve INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE operations on the table. It will also free up some space. Deleting an index can have a docHub impact on database queries therefore only drop the unused or unrequired indexes.

The index definition remains in metadata, and index statistics are kept on nonclustered indexes. Disabling a clustered index on a view or a nonclustered index physically deletes the index data.
What is Indexing? Indexing makes columns faster to query by creating pointers to where data is stored within a database. Imagine you want to find a piece of information that is within a large database. To get this information out of the database the computer will look through every row until it finds it.

To answer whether indexes are useful for inserts and deletes -- the answer in both cases is DEFINTELY YES
Using SQL Server Management Studio In Object Explorer, expand the database that contains the table on which you want to delete an index. Expand the Tables folder. Expand the table that contains the index you want to delete. Expand the Indexes folder. Right-click the index you want to delete and select Delete.
