An abnormal Pap test or HPV test result may mean more testing is needed to see if a cancer or a pre-cancer is present. The tests that are used include colposcopy (with biopsy), endocervical scraping and cone biopsies.
People should avoid having sex for 2 days before a Pap smear, as sex can cause a discharge that may affect the result. People should also avoid douching, applying any contraception or medication creams in the vagina, or using tampons.
Most abnormal Pap tests are caused by HPV infections. Other types of infectionsuch as those caused by bacteria, yeast, or protozoa (Trichomonas)sometimes lead to minor changes on a Pap test called atypical squamous cells.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Treatment Options After an Abnormal Pap Test This means you can watch and wait. Low-grade cervical changes are unlikely to become cervical cancer. If the changes are moderate- to high-grade, your doctor will evaluate more options. These changes create a higher risk of cervical cancer.
If your Pap test showed only healthy cervical cells, it is called a negative result. Sometimes the results will say the cells found were normal. You wont need any more treatment or testing until youre due for your next Pap test and pelvic exam.
It is normal for a patient to have acidic/sour odor for a few days after the procedure. They may have the discharge for up to 2 weeks. But, if the discharge has a smelly or fishy odor, you probably have an infection and need to see the doctor to be treated for the same.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
