An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine-digit number that IRS assigns in the following format: XX-X. However, for employee plans, an alpha (for example, P) or the plan number (e.g., 003) may follow the EIN.
EINs never expire, and once an EIN is assigned to an entity, it will not be reissued even if the entity disappears. Do all businesses need an EIN? Sole proprietorships with no employees do not necessarily need an EIN.

An EIN is like a Social Security number for your business while you cant change it, you can get a new one and change your business details. The IRS uses an employer identification number, or EIN, to identify a business entity. This unique nine-digit number is like a Social Security number for companies.
Can You Have More Than One EIN Number? In summary, yes. As long as each EIN is for a separate business entity, a person may apply for multiple EINs. Just remember, you must request one EIN at a time and not on the same day!
The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.
