hi im lauren haynes im the school counselor at shipleys choice elementary school and as part of national school counseling week i thought i would try to explain why school counselors prefer to be called school counselors and not guidance counselors so lets start at the very beginning over a hundred years ago school counseling started as something called vocational counseling this was to help students find a job after they were finished with school in the 1950s vocational counselors became known as guidance counselors because something exciting was happening in the world called the space race different countries in the world were competing to see who could get to the moon first so the united states government asked guidance counselors to help increase the number of students that were entering fields in science and math so hopefully they would go into government jobs and help us win the space race over about the next 30 years guidance counselors would be used to help students get adm
