Data-driven practices can help counselors identify areas of need and provide targeted interventions and support. For example, if a school notices that a particular group of students is struggling in math, they can use data to identify the root cause of the issue and develop a plan to address it.
Student Self-Assessments At the beginning of each group or individual session ask students to fill out a pre-counseling self-assessment on the topic you will be working on with them. During their last session, have them complete the same self-assessment. Compare the results to see where progress has been made.
Process data is descriptive in nature and communicates what happened during the intervention and who was impacted. This type of data includes but is not limited to the number of students who participated; when the intervention occurred; and the duration, frequency and intensity of the intervention.
Your goal as a school counselor is to help students take advantage of their strengths and to help them minimize their weaknesses. There are three main types of student data you will be working with. These are academic data, demographic data, and student action data.
Outcome data is used to assess changes to the data upon finishing the intervention to provide an understanding of the interventions impact. This data serves as quantitative support to show student improvement during the course of the intervention, allowing more effective advocacy for the school counseling program.
Needs assessments (free response questions) Informational interviews. Group behaviors. Genograms (student or counselor-created) Observations from classroom teachers of student academics and behavior.
Use the data to help students succeed Just as teachers use data to create learning experiences, counselors can use it to create guidance programs that address students academic, social, and emotional development and future career plans.
