Bill Whitlow, a Covington, Kentucky-based restaurant operator, said that a bigger issue is when a customer signs the merchant copy and then accidentally takes it home, so that all that is left behind is a blank customer copy. The restaurants are then left to figure out what the tip was meant to be.
A cardholder receipt is the printed receipt provided to a cardholder at the time of the transaction. Merchant (copy) receipt. A merchant (copy) receipt is a printed or electronic copy of the transaction that contains specific information not found on the cardholder receipt that is defined later in this section.
Online orders provide a detailed receipt that is confirmation of your order. All restaurants provide an itemized receipt when you are finished with your meal to request payment. That receipt is yours to keep no matter how you pay for you meals. You may have to ask for a detailed receipt if you are not provided one.
An itemized meal receipt should have the name of the establishment, the date of service, the items purchased, the amount paid for each item, and the tax. If the tip is not included in the total it should be written on the receipt.
The yellow copy is to stay in the office receipt book and to be retained in the receipting office. Exception If a mistake is made while writing receipt it may be voided. Mark the receipt VOID and retain the original white copy in the receipt book along with the yellow copy.
Calculate how much you wish to pay in tip, then write this amount on the Tip line of your receipt. Note that there are typically two copies of the receipt: one marked Merchant Copy and another marked Customer Copy. You can write the tip on the Customer Copy for your records.
At your next meal out, do NOT leave a blank copy of your receipt on the table when you leave. While 99.99% of servers would never dream of adding a generous tip to your unsigned, abandoned receipt (thats what youre there for!), there is the opportunity for this to happen if you leave a blank copy at the restaurant.
If you want to be a smart consumer, keep your customer copy. That way, you can validate that what you think you were charged is what was actually charged to your credit card. And then once you see that it is matching up, then you can dispose of that receipt, she said.
