To become a charity (a registered charity), non-profit groups need to register as a charity with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to be able to issue official tax receipts to their donors.
It depends on the kind of gift. Your charity can issue receipts for gifts in kind as of your effective date of registration. In the case of cash gifts, you can issue receipts as of the year of registration.
You should keep your official donation receipts for six years after the end of the tax year you made a claim for, in case the Canada Revenue Agency asks to see them. If you did your taxes late, keep your receipts for six years from the date you submitted your return.
A registered charity can only issue an official donation receipt to the individual or organization that made the gift, and the name and address of the donor must appear on the receipt. A charity cannot issue an official donation receipt in the name of anyone but the true donor.
A donation receipt is a written acknowledgment to your donor of their contribution to your cause. In addition to showing donor appreciation, these messages help your supporters file their annual income tax return deductions and help your charitable organization keep good internal records of gifts.
A tax receipt can be issued only in the name of the individual or organization that actually gave the gift. If the donation is made by a cheque written on a joint bank account, the tax receipt should be issued in both names on the cheque, and the receipt may be used by either party to claim a tax credit.
A receipt in Canada must include the date of the transaction, the name and address of the business, a description of the items purchased, the price of each item, and the total amount paid.
Canada Revenue Agency allows Goodwill to offer a tax receipt for eligible items using a Fair Market Value assessment. The value is determined by understanding what the item would be sold for today in the current market.
