Credit repair companies often promise to help remove negative items from your credit reports, which could help improve your credit scores, in exchange for a fee. But you can take the same steps yourself without the fee.
Accurate items in your record cant be removed before the term set by law expires, which is seven years for most negative items. For example, if you missed payments on your credit card, your dispute to remove that information will be denied.
A letter of deletion is a request to remove inaccurate marks from your credit report. I have included a sample letter of deletion, below, along with instructions on how to submit it online for free. No one can legally remove accurate and timely negative information from a credit report.
In the vast majority of cases, hiring an outside company will do no more than waste your money. The most common way credit repair businesses work is to dispute all negative items that appear on your report, whether they are accurate or not.
Since pay for delete technically skirts a legal line, debt collectors will rarely agree to it directly. If they do, they typically wont put it in writing. The reason is that if the credit bureaus were to find out that they were removing accounts that were legitimately incurred, it would violate the FCRA.
No-one can. But you CAN ask to have errors corrected within your credit file. Well tackle that in a moment. For now, rest assured a credit repair firm cannot magically repair your credit or increase your credit score.
Paying a credit repair company to fix your credit report is usually a waste of money since you can dispute credit report information yourself, for free. In either case, information will only be removed or modified if it is inaccurate.
Correct information cannot be removed and stays on file for at least seven years. So, if your score is low due to accurate negative information, youll need to repair your credit over time by making payments on time and decreasing your overall amount of debt.
