Comma abuse Dont use a comma to separate the subject from the verb. Dont put a comma between the two verbs or verb phrases in a compound predicate. Dont put a comma between the two nouns, noun phrases, or noun clauses in a compound subject or compound object.
Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause. Example: In the beginning, there was light. Use a pair of commas in the middle of a sentence to set off clauses, phrases, and words that are not essential to the meaning of the sentence.
Some writers omit the comma if both clauses are short: Example: I paint and he writes. If there is no independent clause after the connector, a comma is generally unnecessary. Example: He thought quickly but still did not answer correctly.
No comma when the independent clause comes first. Nor do you ever need a comma inside an independent clause. Not between the subject and predicatethe tree swallows, no comma after treeand not between the predicating verb and the direct objectthe tree swallows a fence, no comma after swallows.
What is a comma? While a period ends a sentence, a comma indicates a smaller break. Some writers think of a comma as a soft pausea punctuation mark that separates words, clauses, or ideas within a sentence.
Except after an introductory dependent clause, do not use a comma to separate a dependent clause from a main clause unless the dependent clause provides nonessential information.
Commas (Eight Basic Uses) Use a comma to separate independent clauses. Use a comma after an introductory clause or phrase. Use a comma between all items in a series. Use commas to set off nonrestrictive clauses. Use a comma to set off appositives. Use a comma to indicate direct address. Use commas to set off direct quotations.
Dont use commas if the clause is essential for meaning. If you can remove the clause and your sentence means the same thing, its non-essential and should go between commas. Non-essential clauses are also called non-restrictive or non-defining clauses.
