Erase All Content and Settings is available only in macOS Monterey or later, and only on a Mac with Apple silicon or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip.
You cant erase a drive thats actively running your Macs operating system or any open applications. Physical Damage: In some cases, a greyed-out Erase button can be an indicator of physical damage to the drive.
Choose Apple menu Restart, then immediately press and hold Command-R. In the Recovery app window, select Disk Utility, then click Continue. In Disk Utility, select the volume you want to erase in the sidebar, then click Erase in the toolbar.
Why is the Erase Assistant not supported on this Mac? This Erase Assistant is not supported on this Mac error because your macOS doesnt have Apple Silicon or its not an Intel-based Mac with a T2 security chip. Another reason is that it doesnt support Erase Assistant.
The disk isnt mounted. If a disk is connected to your Mac but not mounted in the Finder, Disk Utility wont be able to erase it. The solution to this one is simple, just choose the disk in Disk Utilitys sidebar and click Mount in the toolbar. Once its mounted, youll be able to erase it.
An outdated Mac operating system is more prone to Mac errors, which is probably why Disk Utility wont let you erase the hard drive. Luckily, updating the macOS can update firmware on your Mac and fix the erase process has failed error. Click the Apple logo, then select System Preferences Software Update.
Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold these four keys: Option, Command, P, and R. Release the keys after about 20 seconds. Your Mac will restart. After your Mac starts up again, adjust any system settings that were reset.
Choose Apple menu System Settings, then click General in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.) Click Transfer or Reset on the right, then click Erase All Contents and Settings. In Erase Assistant, enter your administrator information and click Unlock.
