1. Loss of control in-flight (LOC-I) A loss of control in-flight is the most common cause of general aviation accidents. Loss of control in-flight typically occurs when a plane deviates from its flight envelope, i.e. the aerial region within which an aircraft operates safely.
Flying under general aviation (GA) is not safer than driving. Statistically, GAs safety record is closer to the safety record of operating motorcycles. It just isnt as safe as airline flying.
Pilot Error Pilot error is the most common cause of aviation accidents. Mechanical Error Mechanical errors are the second leading cause of aviation accidents, accounting for 22% of all crashes.
Loss of control in flight, controlled flight into terrain, fuel mismanagement, unintended flight into instrument meteorological conditions, midair collisions, low-altitude operations, and several other leading causes of general aviation accidents can be traced back to the pilot.
A whiteout is the term that refers to a severe storm condition with blowing snow, wind drifts, and high winds with reduced visibility. When the sky is overcast and the ground is snow covered, the landscape may appear entirely white, with no visible horizon. Distances are difficult to judge.
There are no shadows, no horizon or clouds and all depth-of-field and orientation are lost. A white out situation is severe in that there arent any visual references. Flying is not recommended in any white out situation.
Inflight loss of control (LOC-I) is the leading cause of fatalities in aviation. It dominates among homebuilts, in general aviation as a whole, and in the commercial jet fleet worldwide.
Cause: Sunlight is blocked, reduced and scattered by ice crystals in falling snow, wind-blown spin-drift, water droplets in low-lying clouds or localised fog, etc. The remaining scattered light is merged and blended.
Whiteouts occur when pilots experience a loss of depth perception due to being surrounded by blowing snow, dust, sand, mud or water.
Dont gloss over this important aspect of flight planning before taking on any mountainous-area route. Whether you will cross numerous ridgelines, or climb to altitudes close to your aircrafts limits, mountain obscuration is a potential hazard for VFR operations.
