Generally, the amount you can deduct on your taxes is the fair market value of the property you donate, or the cash value. However, in some cases, the IRS may limit the amount you can claim on your taxes. You can generally claim charitable contributions if theyre less than 60% of your adjusted gross income.
The IRS will take note of your return and perhaps audit you if your charitable deductions seem unusual in any way. A common way to stand out is if your total contributions exceed the norm for someone with your income profile.
Because charitable contributions are often tax deductible, taxpayers must furnish proof in the form of an official dated receipt from the receiving organization or some other official record of the transaction.
Heres a list of what to include in each of your receipts: Your organizations name. Your donors name. Your recorded date of the donation. Your recorded amount of the donation. Your organizations 501(c)(3) status. Your acknowledgment no goods/services were exchanged for the donation.
Any contribution of cash or property under $250 does not require a receipt. But any cash, check, or other monetary gift does require either a bank record or acknowledgment from the organization, regardless of the size of the gift.
Sending out year-end receipts is a great way to thank your donors and acknowledge how much their donations mean to your organization. This is also a great opportunity to set the stage for the coming year of gift-giving. Your donors need a year-end tax receipt to get tax exemption for their donation.
For any contribution of $250 or more (including contributions of cash or property), you must obtain and keep in your records a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the qualified organization indicating the amount of the cash and a description of any property other than cash contributed.
The written acknowledgment required to substantiate a charitable contribution of $250 or more must contain the following information: name of the organization; amount of cash contribution; description (but not value) of non-cash contribution;
