For example a contract might be drawn up with a child specifying their reward of a star for not bed-wetting. These agreements make clear the schedule of reinforcement being applied and in signing up to the agreement it is understood that this might motivate the client to cooperate with the program.
For example, a goal may be stated in the contract that a student will participate in class activities by raising his hand and being called upon by the teacher before offering an answer or comment. Art, gym, or library instructors would then rate the students behaviors in these out-of-class settings and share these
Disadvantages: Because it is a contract, there has to be consequences for violating the contract terms. Such a mindset and approach to behavior problems works against a collaborative treatment environment that encourages learning from mistakes.
A behavior contract is a written contract between a student and a teacher or administrator outlining the childs behavioral obligations in meeting the terms of the contract, as well as the teachers obligations once the child has met his or her agreement.
Behavioural contracting is an intervention technique in which a client signs an agreement to make certain behaviour changes within a specified time, usually with explicitly defined rewards for adherence or success.
Behavior contracts do the opposite. They demoralize students and make them feel helpless to change the course of their academic life. Breaking rules and causing trouble then becomes not merely something they choose to dowhich can be fixedbut rather it becomes who they arewhich cant.
395). Advantages. The advantage of using a behavioral contract with a student is that it provides explicit expectations, structure, con- sistency, routine, and organization for every- one involved, including the teachers, student, administrators, and parents (PBIS World, 2013).
Students should be kept on behavior contracts for 4-8 weeks. However, some students may need longer. Re-evaluate the contract every 4 weeks. You may need to change one of the desired behaviors.
