Liquor inventory can be taken by following these steps: Use a spreadsheet or inventory software. Start at the front bar. Record other places where you keep alcohol. Note how much liquid is in each bottle. Add up your totals.
At 30% to 40%, liquor is not a hospitable environment for bacteria. And if its not opened, youll deal with virtually no oxidation. But once you open a liquor bottle, oxidation begins. Thats why most hard liquors will go bad within a year or two.
Just how long does alcohol last? The good news is that liquor such as gin, vodka, whiskey, tequila, and rum, are considered shelf-stable. That means that as long as you store the bottle properly and it remains unopened, you can consider it safe to drink indefinitely.
Liquor does not expire to the point of causing sickness. It simply loses flavor generally a year after being opened.
The standard liquor markup in bars is around 400 to 500%. Thats the highest of all types of alcohol. And thats the reason why high-volume nightclubs that sell a lot of shots are some of the most profitable in the hospitality industry. They also help cover a lot of the bars overhead expenses.
Unopened liquor with alcohol content over 40% has an almost indefinite shelf life. Liqueurs and cordials spoil faster because of their sugar content.
Keeping them in a relatively cool place preserves them longer. As temperatures rise, the alcohol begins to expand and can evaporate more quickly. While it wont hurt you healthwise to consume, storing in a warm place can cause the liquor to oxidize more quickly and change flavors over time.
