Hey there and thanks for watching WPBeginner. Today well look at the difference between image alt text vs image title text in WordPress. An alt text or alternate text is an attribute added to an image tag in html. This will appear inside the image container when the image cant be displayed like this. It helps the search engines understand what the image is about. Its also helpful if an image cant be found. An image title tag is another html attribute, but instead of going inside the image container, youll see the image title when you mouse over the photo like this. These two attributes are used to improve accessibility online for those with poor vision or for screen reader devices. So lets add alt tag and title tag to an image in WordPress. Im in a new post and Ill upload an image from here. When I first upload the image, youll see these options over here. I can fill out the alt text down here and this title is actually used for WordPress this is not the title attribute were

The title attribute on an tag adds a tooltip with title text to the image. Hovering the mouse over the image will display the tooltip.
Also called alt tags and alt descriptions, alt text is the written copy that appears in place of an image on a webpage if the image fails to load on a user's screen. This text helps screen-reading tools describe images to visually impaired readers and allows search engines to better crawl and rank your website.
Optimizing your images by adding titles to all of them is probably not going to make a significant change in your pages' visibility in search engine results. However, including title attributes also won't hurt your site from an SEO standpoint. In fact, Google recommends it.
Don't add alt text to every image. You should add alt text to most images on a webpage for the sake of SEO, UX, and accessibility — however, there are exceptions. Images that are purely decorative or are described in text nearby, for example, should have an empty alt attribute.
In the context of the image tag, alt text is used to describe visual elements to users who can't see them, either because the image failed to load or because they are using a screen-reader. The image title attribute is only visible on mouse-over and displays just the image title.
"ALT" is the abbreviation for alternative text, which is the technical name for image description. The ALT badge on images lets you know when someone has added a description to their image.
Image title is basically the name of your image. Like alt text, it lets users and search engines know what's in the picture. Unlike alt text, the image title is not displayed when the image is missing or not loaded properly. Instead, it is displayed when the user hovers their mouse over the image.
The image title attributes should be used in a complementary way for the image file names. An image filename is prominent for Search Engines and Search Engine Optimization. Image file names provide information, and context for the purpose of the image.
What is Image Title Text? Image title text is an attribute used to provide additional information about the image. That being said, the image title is not used for search ranking, so it is not quite as important to optimize for.
The alt attribute provides alternative information for an image if a user for some reason cannot view it (because of slow connection, an error in the src attribute, or if the user uses a screen reader). Tip: To create a tooltip for an image, use the title attribute!
