Chapter 6 (Pages 98-107): 61) Look acrost the river, Lennie, an Ill tell you so you can almost see it (Steinbeck 105). 62) No, Lennie, I aint mad. I never been mad, an I aint now. Thats a thing I want ya to know (Steinbeck 106).
Because George is forced to kill his friend himself, Lennies death is not only the death of a single vulnerable person, but also the destruction of a rare and idealized friendship.
Lennie asks him to tell the story of their farm, and George begins, talking about how most men drift along, without any companions, but he and Lennie have one another. The noises of men in the woods come closer, and George tells Lennie to take off his hat and look across the river while he describes their farm.
Of Mice and Men ends with Lennie being shot by his only friend, George, after accidentally murdering the wife of his bosss son, Curley. Curley vows to take revenge on Lennie by shooting him in the chest. Lennie is mentally disabled and doesnt know his own strength.
In chapter 6, the last chapter of Of Mice and Men, Lennie has killed Curleys wife and run away to the place that George told him to meet him at if something bad happened. When Curley finds his wife dead, he gathers the other men to hunt down and kill Lennie.
Where was Lennie hiding? Lennie was hiding by the water in the spot where George had told him to hide if something went wrong.
Lennie describes his fears of George leaving and confesses that he has once again done a bad thing.
Les do it now, Lennie says. Les get that place now. George agrees. He raises Carlsons gun, which he has removed from his jacket, and shoots Lennie in the back of the head. As Lennie falls to the ground and becomes still, George tosses the gun away and sits down on the riverbank.
