The void contents range between 30% to 45% for coarse aggregate and 40% to 50% for fine aggregate.
In soil mechanics, the void ratio describes the relationship between the volume of voids, or spaces, in the soil or aggregate to the volume of solid constituents, or grains. Algebraically, e = Vv /Vs, where e represents the void ratio, Vv represents the volume of voids and Vs represent the volume of solid grains.
The fine aggregate specific gravity test (Figure 1) is used to calculate the specific gravity of a fine aggregate sample by determining the ratio of the weight of a given volume of aggregate to the weight of an equal volume of water. It is similar in nature to the coarse aggregate specific gravity test.
The coarse aggregate angularity (CAA) test is a method of determining the angularity of coarse aggregate (Figure 1). Coarse aggregate angularity is important to ensure adequate aggregate interlock and prevent excessive HMA deformation under load (rutting).
Tests on Aggregate Crushing test. Abrasion test. Impact test. Soundness test. Shape test. Specific gravity and water absorption test. Bitumen adhesion test.
Fine aggregates generally consist of natural sand or crushed stone with most particles passing through a 3/8-inch sieve. Coarse aggregates are any particles greater than 0.19 inch, but generally range between 3/8 and 1.5 inches in diameter.
The fine aggregate angularity test determines the loose uncompacted void content of a fine aggregate material. The void content information derived from this test gives you an indication of the effect fine aggregate will have on stability and voids in the mineral aggregate.
The more these voids are filled, the less workable the concrete becomes, therefore, a compromise between workability and economy is necessary. The moisture content of an aggregate is an important factor when developing the proper water/cementitious material ratio.
Fine aggregate angularity is important because an excess of rounded fine aggregate (often in the form of natural sand) can lead to HMA rutting. Figure 1: Fine aggregate angularity test. The FAA test estimates fine aggregate angularity by measuring the loose uncompacted void content of a fine aggregate sample.
Uncompacted void content is calculated as the difference between the volume of the cylindrical measure and the absolute volume of the fine aggregate collected in the measure expressed as a percentage of the volume of the measure. This value is also known as the Fine Aggregate Angularity or FAA.
