What is a DOTX file? Files with DOTX extension are template files created by Microsoft Word to have pre-formatted settings for generation of further DOCX files. A template file is created in order to have specific user settings that should be applied to subsequent flies created from these.
From Wikipedia: The tilde symbol is used to prefix hidden temporary files that are created when a document is opened in Windows. For example, when you open a Word document called Document1. doc, a file called ~$cument1. doc is created in the same directory.
docx file type is for a standard Word document which contains no macros. The . dotx file type is used for templates from which new documents are generated. It cannot contain macros, either.
Creating a Custom Template Click the File tab and select Save as Template. Type a name for your template into the File Name field. Select Microsoft Word template (*. dotx) from the File Format menu if your template doesnt contain macros, or Microsoft Word Macro-Enabled Template (*. Click Save.
