Low Velocity Impact Spatter Bloodstains resulting from blood moving 7.5m/s. e.g. free-falling drops, cast-off from weapon. Impact Pattern Bloodstain pattern created when blood receives a blow or force resulting in the dispersion of smaller drops of blood.
Low Velocity Impact Spatter (LVIS) -- A bloodstain pattern that is caused by a low velocity impact/force to a blood source. Medium Velocity Impact Spatter (MVIS) -- A bloodstain pattern caused by a medium velocity impact/force to a blood source. A beating typically causes this type of spatter.
A void can indicate, often by its distinct shape, the absence or movement of an ob- ject that was present during the bloodshed; and in many cases, the physical dimensions of that object. Void patterns may also re- veal the precise position of clothing on an individual at the time of the bloodletting incident.
A bloodstain pattern that results when blood moving slowly (~1.5 metres per second or less) strikes a surface. Blood dripping from a nosebleed onto the floor creates a low velocity impact spatter.
Low-velocity spatters are usually created just as a result of blood dripping from the individual (i.e., gravity). Cast-off patterns are associated with impact spatter, these patterns are created when the object that is used in the attack is swung and the blood on the object is swung onto a nearby surface.
The characteristics of blood spatter depend on the speed at which the blood leaves the body and the type of force applied to the blood source. Gunshot spatter - includes both forward spatter from the exit wound and back spatter from the entrance wound.
A low velocity spatter is usually four to eight millimeters in size and is often a result of dripping blood after a victim sustains an injury such as a stab or in some cases a punch. For example, if a victim is stabbed and then walks around bleeding, the drops of blood that are left behind are low velocity.
Void Patterns A void occurs when a person or object blocks the path of the blood. They are important because voids can show investigators if objects are missing from the scene, where a person or persons were at the time of the incident, and if a body was moved.
Low velocity impacts rely on the principle of drop weight (Fig. 1) inspired by the first law of vibrations; the static mode [24]. The incident energy that is absorbed in composites can create some large fracture areas. As a result, both the strength and stiffness of the composite are reduced.
We classify bloodstains into three main categories; Passive Stains: These occur with indirect forces such as gravity acting on the injured body. Transfer Stains: These occur by objects or surroundings coming into contact with the blood. Projected/Impact stains: These occur by the blood that travelled in the air.
