Did you know the Universe is full of voids? Areas where very few things exist. Botes void or the Great Nothing is such a place. When you look up at the night sky, everything seems to be the same. Countless stars spread out in fairly uniform fashion. But huge areas such as Botes void are different and contain very few objects. The Universe is a structure on its own: long filaments of dark matter threaded with galaxies and clusters of galaxies punctuated by vast voids. These voids are just that; areas devoid of matter. To truly understand the Universe, we may have to gaze into the abyss. The largest known void in the Universe is Botes void. This massive empty spherical region in space is about 330 million light-years in diameter. It accounts for 0.27% of the diameter of the entire Universe, which itself is a daunting 93 billion light-years across. Botes void is a massive expanse of empty space unlike any other ever observed. This place lies about 700 millio

Basically, two different x ray sources are used in xps to distinguish Auger peaks from photo electron peaks. An Auger peak represents the kinetic energy of an auger electron which changes with the energy of primary xrays.
Hydrogen has no core electrons and, therefore, core–electron XPS is impossible. The H 1s electrons are valence electrons and as such participate in chemical bonding. Any signal from hydrogen would overlap with signals from excitation of valence electrons from other surface atoms.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
Satellite peaks is used to identify Shake-ups, energy loss, plasmons and various un-identified Peaks. These appears as peaks to the high binding energy sides to the main peak in the XPS spectrum.
In XPS, the sample is irradiated with low-energy (~1.5 keV) X-rays, in order to provoke the photoelectric effect. The energy spectrum of the emitted photoelectrons is determined by means of a high-resolution electron spectrometer.
The intensity depends on the X-ray emission, charge neutralization, resolution, sample itself and many other parameters. So it may happen that withn the same sample and using same setting you would get a different peak intensity if you measure them on different date/time.
The most prevalent electron spectrometer for XPS is the hemispherical electron analyzer. They have high energy resolution and spatial selection of the emitted electrons.
XPS involves the bombardment of a sample surface with X-rays and measurement of the intensity of photoelectrons and Auger electrons emitted from that surface as a function of their energy. As a technique, XPS can in principle provide not just elemental analysis but also chemical information.
The XPS binding energy of an atom is a measure of the electronic environment of the atom. Decreasing the electron density of an atom (such as a C-O bond compared with a C-C bond) increases the binding energy of the atom.
binding energy. The peaks in a PES spectrum correspond to electrons in different subshells of an atom. The peaks with the lowest binding energies correspond to valence electrons, while the peaks with higher binding energies correspond to core electrons.
