In C++, we must explicitly typecast return value of malloc to (int *). 2) void pointers in C are used to implement generic functions in C. For example compare function which is used in qsort(). Some Interesting Facts: 1) void pointers cannot be dereferenced.
Not only is it OK to free() a void * value, by definition, all free() ever sees is a void * , so technically, everything freed in C is void * :-) @Daniel - If you ask me, it should be struct foo *p = malloc(sizeof *p)); but what do I know?
The malloc() and calloc() function return the void pointer, so these functions can be used to allocate the memory of any data type. #include #include int main() { int a=90; int *x = (int*)malloc(sizeof(int)) ; x=a; printf(Value which is pointed by x pointer : %d,*x);
The size of void pointer varies system to system. If the system is 16-bit, size of void pointer is 2 bytes. If the system is 32-bit, size of void pointer is 4 bytes. If the system is 64-bit, size of void pointer is 8 bytes.
It is also called general purpose pointer. It is not safe to delete a void pointer in C/C++ because delete needs to call the destructor of whatever object its destroying, and it is impossible to do that if it doesnt know the type.
free() function in C should only be used either for the pointers pointing to the memory allocated using malloc() or for a NULL pointer. free() function only frees the memory from the heap and it does not call the destructor. To destroy the allocated memory and call the destructor we can use the delete() operator in C.
Why do we use a void pointer in C programs? We use the void pointers to overcome the issue of assigning separate values to different data types in a program. The pointer to void can be used in generic functions in C because it is capable of pointing to any data type.
The void pointer in C is a pointer that is not associated with any data types. It points to some data location in the storage. This means that it points to the address of variables. It is also called the general purpose pointer. In C, malloc() and calloc() functions return void * or generic pointers.
