today i want to talk about pointers specifically pointers that dont have type information are also known as void pointers [Music] hey everybody welcome back todays video is for the beginners for fairly beginner programmers out there who think that youve finally wrapped your head around pointers but then you see something like this and youre not really sure what to make of it because this causes a serious moment of pause for a lot of beginners so i thought today we would talk about it talk about what a void pointer is why you might want to use one and well also talk about some examples where you may have already used a void pointer and you just didnt realize it also at the end im going to talk a little bit about a subtle difference between c and c plus plus might save you some time but first a big thank you to all of you who support this channel through patreon buying merch and online classes also for those of you that are curious about where you can get example code from my vid

Void pointers in C are used to implement generic functions.
The difference between null and void as term for nothing stems from their place in physical space. A void is nothing but takes up space; null is nothing at all. In other words, you could measure a void but null offers nothing to measure.
A void pointer is a pointer that can point to any type of object, but does not know what type of object it points to. A void pointer must be explicitly cast into another type of pointer to perform indirection. A null pointer is a pointer that does not point to an address.
The difference between Null pointer and Void pointer is that Null pointer is a value and Void pointer is a type.
The void data type always represents an empty set of values. The only object that can be declared with the type specifier void is a pointer. You cannot declare a variable of type void , but you can explicitly convert any expression to type void .
void (C++) If a pointer's type is void* , the pointer can point to any variable that's not declared with the const or volatile keyword. A void* pointer can't be dereferenced unless it's cast to another type. A void* pointer can be converted into any other type of data pointer.
The only limitations with void pointers are: you cannot dereference void pointer for obvious reasons. sizeof(void) is illegal. you cannot perform pointer arithmetics on void pointers.
The difference between Null pointer and Void pointer is that Null pointer is a value and Void pointer is a type.
The pointer to void can be used in generic functions in C because it is capable of pointing to any data type. One can assign the void pointer with any data type's address, and then assign the void pointer to any pointer without even performing some sort of explicit typecasting. So, it reduces complications in a code.
A void pointer in C++ is a special pointer that can point to objects of any data type. In other words, a void pointer is a general purpose pointer that can store the address of any data type, and it can be typecasted to any type. A void pointer is not associated with any particular data type.
